Christian Dior Set To Be The Star for London Hat Week
26th March to 1st April 2015
Two of Christian Dior hats held center stage at the 21st Century Hat Exhibition at the East India House in central London during the London Hat Week 2015. The Exhibition curated by Milliner Monique Lee and Anna Mott also had on display hats by other Milliners from around the world and of high acclaim. Some of the Milliner names some may recognise where Jo Miller, UK., Ulli Meins, Germany., Stanka Kostadinova Mihaleva, Kuwait., Maria Eugenia Jimenez Jimenez, Spain., Jacquiline Kolbe, South Africa Paris Kyne now deceased from Australia and Award winner Monica Feher, Ireland to name a few.
It was really an education to get right up to the hats and talk with some of the Milliners about their work and processes used for their creation. We were very fortunate to have a personal conversation with most of the most of the Milliners present and an exclusive interview with Monica Feher. Monica was kind enough to highlight her creativity with building a tool that could serve as a hat-block due to financial restrictions. Most of Monica’s talk was based around that anyone could make a hat to check all of the boxes for a standard Ascot hat and would also aim to sit in a museum.
The exhibition was co-hosted by an army of Millinery practitioners from the X Terrace Fashion Platform who did not fall short with the refreshments at this free event. The event was open to the public from 28 to 30 March and also looked at introducing emerging Milliners to the fashion public.
With Christian Dior holding center stage it was a pleasure to hear the many stories about the Master Milliner and how he laid down the blueprint for most fashion houses in the mid 20th Century. It was also great to hear that Christian Dior was probably the first European business to embrace Diversity in the Work Place and had a Fair Wage Policy.
